The Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Course prepares students to provide basic and limited advanced emergency medical care and transportation for critical and emergency patients who access the emergency medical system. This individual possesses the basic knowledge and skills necessary to provide patient care and transportation. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians function as part of a comprehensive EMS response, under medical oversight. Advanced Emergency Medical Technicians perform interventions with the basic and advanced equipment typically found on an ambulance. This level replaces EMT-Intermediate.

Completion of this Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Training Course is designed to prepare and qualify a student to take the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) AEMT written and psychomotor tests for certification as an AEMT.

Completion of this Advanced Emergency Medical Technician Training Course is designed to prepare and qualify a student to take the National Registry of EMTs (NREMT) AEMT written and psychomotor tests for certification as an AEMT.

After successful completion of the AEMT training course, the student will be capable of performing the following functions:

Intravenous (IV) & Intraosseous (IO) therapies
Injections (Sub-Q. IM, Intradermal )
Supraglottic Airways 
Introduction to EKGs
Advanced drug administration
​Advanced Medical & Traumatic Scenario Pass off 

The AEMT course is 140 hours in length. This course is a hybrid learning environment utilizing online didactic instruction and in–class skills labs, projects and case studies. 

The course is competency–based. Students must demonstrate a level of skills proficiency prior to receiving recommendation for certification.

Pre- Requisites:
1. All participants must be 18 years of age or older.
2. All students MUST have a stethoscope and blood pressure cuff for this course. This may be purchased at the time of registration for $35 or from local retailers.
3. CPR Prerequisite—All students are required to have a current healthcare provider level CPR certification before beginning the course. We will offer certification for $50 on the first day of class for those who do not have CPR certification. You may choose to take a CPR course on your own before the EMT course. If you do, it must be one of the following CPR certifications: Please note that CPR certification through the BYU Advanced First Aid course (HLTH 320) does not meet the CPR certification requirements. If you obtain CPR certification on your own, a copy of your card MUST be emailed to the instructor (prodev@byu.edu) before the second day of class. The American Heart Association (AHA) Healthcare Provider and the American Red Cross – Professional Rescuer CPR certifications meet the standards for this class. 
4. Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)—All students are required to have a current PALS certification before beginning the course. We will offer certification for $50 on the second day of class for those who do not have PALS certification. You may choose to take a PALS course on your own before the EMT course. If you obtain PALS certification on your own, a copy of your card MUST be emailed to the instructor (prodev@byu.edu) before the second day of class.
5. Criminal Background Check — A background check is conducted by the BYU University Police the first week of class.
6. Tuberculosis Test Prerequisite — Tuberculosis test within the 12 months prior to the first night of class. This can be obtained at the BYU Student Health Center, Utah County Health Department, or from your primary care physician. If you have had a previous positive TB test, please see the Bureau of EMS guidelines at the Utah Department of Health website. Tuberculosis test results must be turned in the first week of class. 
7. All participants in the the EMT Advanced Certification class must possess a current National Certification at the EMT level or a current state license at the EMT level or higher. This certification must be obtained by the second week of class, or you will not be allowed to sit for the written or practical exams.
