Isaac Barrus has always wanted to pursue politics, but law school? He didn’t know if that was the path for him — until he attended BYU Law Camp.
My name is Isaac Barrus and I'm 18 years old from Eagle Mountain, Utah. I decided to attend BYU Law Camp last summer after having two representatives from the camp present to my AP Government class.
I've always been into politics and want to have a career in it. I didn't know, however, if law school was something I would be interested in. After listening about all the cool experiences we would have, such as listening to successful lawyers and judges and presenting your own argument in moot court, I decided I couldn't pass this opportunity.
My overall experience was amazing! I made good friends who I still keep in touch with, and I felt at home being with kids who had similar interests as I did. I enjoyed being able to have intelligent conversations with my peers who actually understood what I was saying. I'm not going to lie, though … Law Camp was definitely a lot of hard work! There wasn't one moment where you weren't doing something.
At Law Camp, kids from all over the country with very diverse opinions were able to actually talk to one another and understand one another, something it seems our country hasn't been able to do the last couple decades. I left feeling invigorated and more compassionate towards the “other side.” While I still maintained my beliefs, I no longer felt the "other side" was just a bunch of idiots.
After this amazing week, I had one definite answer: I'm attending law school. I have since had many other opportunities and connections open up to me because of this, and I just wanted to thank BYU for such an amazing week.
